Origin & Breeding History: 'KLEPH12220' originated from a hybrid cross conducted by the breeder, Antonella Capo, in Stuttgart, Germany in July 2008. The cross was made between the female parent 'R 44' and the male parent 'PH2007 0027'. Seedlings were selected in April 2009 and further evaluated in greenhouse trials from February to May 2010 to 2012 in Stuttgart, Germany. 'KLEPH12220' was selected based on its plant growth habit, early flowering, flower colour and quality, leaf quality and cold tolerance. A single seedling was selected for commercialization and named 'KLEPH12220' in May 2011 in Stuttgart, Germany.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'KLEPH12220' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2015 at Bioflora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 13, 2015. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on May 20, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
