Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Ray Sunshine'

Summary: The plant of 'KLEPH15261' is shorter than that of 'Ray Sunshine'. The leaf blade of 'KLEPH15261' has a narrow acute apex whereas the leaf blade of 'Ray Sunshine' has a broad acute to obtuse apex. The secondary colour on the inner side of the corolla of 'KLEPH15261' has a large yellow area whereas the corolla of 'Ray Sunshine' has a medium sized yellow area.

Description:

PLANT: semi-upright to spreading growth habit

LEAF BLADE: ovate to elliptic, narrow acute apex, no variegation, dark green on upper side

PEDICEL: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on upper third
FLOWER: single type, salverform
COROLLA: weak to medium degree of lobing, weak to medium degree of undulation
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): weak to medium conspicuousness of greenish yellow veins, yellow green (RHS 150D) with yellow (RHS 7B) veins when newly opened, yellow (RHS 5C) with darker yellow (RHS 7B and 9B) veins with white (RHS NN155A) and yellow green (RHS 150D) at margins when fully opened
COROLLA LOBE: truncate apex
COROLLA TUBE: inner side yellow green (RHS 150C-D), weak conspicuousness of yellow (RHS 12A) veins on inner side, outer side light green (RHS 145A-B) with light yellow (RHS 12D) veins
ANTHER: yellowish white before dehiscence

Origin & Breeding History: 'KLEPH15261' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Antonella Capo, in Latina, Italy. The cross was made between the female parent variety, 'PH-2011-2754', and the male parent variety, 'PH-2009-1258', in July 2011. Seedlings were selected in April 2012, in Latina, based on plant growth habit, leaf quality, flower colour and flower quality. The selected seedlings were evaluated in multiple greenhouse trials between October 2012 and May 2015. 'KLEPH15261' was selected as a single seedling for commercialization in May 2014.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'KLEPH15261' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2018 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 16, 2018. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on May 24, 2018. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
