Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Fismille'

Summary: 'Fiselfi' produces smaller plants with smaller leaf blades than 'Fismille'. Shape of the base of the leaf blade for 'Fiselfi' is wedge-shaped while it is straight to rounded for 'Fismille'. Development of lobes on the leaf blades is moderate for 'Fiselfi' while it is absent to very weak for 'Fismille'. 'Fiselfi' has moderate to strong lobe development on the bracts while for 'Fismille' it is absent to very weak. Folding of the bracts for 'Fiselfi' is absent while it is present for 'Fismille'. The bracts of 'Fiselfi' are positioned with a more upward attitude than those of 'Fismille'. 'Fiselfi' produces plants with more cyathia than those of 'Fismille'.

Description:

'Fiselfi' is a diploid poinsettia variety with weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the stem. The broad ovate shaped leaves have a wedge-shaped base with no anthocyanin colouration on the upper and lower sides. The veins on the upper and lower sides of the leaf blades have weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. Development of lobes on the leaf blades is moderate and the shape of the sinus between the lobes is rounded. Incision of the margin of the leaf blades is absent. Intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the upper side of the petiole is strong whereas on the lower side it is weak to moderate.

'Fiselfi' produces a moderate number of uniform coloured bracts which are red in colour. Initiation of colour occurs early in the season. Development of lobes on the bracts is moderate to strong and the shape of the sinus between the lobes is rounded. Incision of the margin of the bracts is absent. There is no folding, curving or twisting of the bracts. The broad ovate shaped bracts have a rounded to wedge-shaped base and absent to weak intensity of rugosity between the veins. Time of opening of the first three cyathia is early in the season. The glands of the cyathium are orange in colour and small to medium in size.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Fiselfi' originated from crossing female parent, hybrid seedling no. S 1204-1 (characterized by orange-red bract colour, medium green foliage and vigorous growth) with an unknown pollen parent. The hybridization took place in Hillscheid, Germany in 1994. The seeds obtained were germinated in the spring of 1995 and flowering seedlings were selected in December of 1995. In the spring of 1996, cuttings from original seedling number 4505 were grafted on rootstocks of 'Maren' to induce branching ability. Branched plants grown from cuttings of the grafted plants were examined from the fall of 1997 to 1999 when selection of 'Fiselfi' was confirmed.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Fiselfi' were conducted at Westcan Greenhouses Ltd., Langley, British Columbia in November/December of 2001. The trial consisted of a minimum of 12 plants of each variety grown in a greenhouse. The 15 cm pots were spaced approximately 38 cm (from center to center) apart. Unless otherwise indicated, measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
