Origin & Breeding History: 'Rax Europe' originated from a cross made in March 2008 at Ayaengei Co., Ltd. in Miyazaki, Japan between an unspecified Ranunculus cortusifolius variety, as the female parent, and Ranunculus asiaticus variety 'Shaun Purple', as the male parent. From October 2008 to March 2009, resulting seeds were cultured and a specific line was selected based on flower size, stalk straightness, number of gathered flowers and growth rate. A secondary selection was made from October 2009 and March 2010 based on the same criteria. From October 2010 to March 2011, the lines selected in the secondary selection (3 strains per each selected line) were cultured and specific lines were selected based on the same criteria. From October 2011 to March 2012, the lines selected in the tertiary selection (7 strains per each selected line) were cultured, their properties confirmed and the new variety was named 'Rax Europe'.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Rax Europe' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 29974, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Japan. The trials were conducted by the Center for Seeds and Seedlings at the Nishinihon Station in Ibaraki, Japan from 2016 to 2017. The colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
