Variety used for comparison: 'Golden Beauty'

Summary: 'OHB003790' has dark green leaves while 'Golden Beauty' has medium green leaves. 'OHB003790' has a shorter peduncle and larger flower head diameter than 'Golden Beauty'. In lateral view the lower part of the flower head is concave for 'OHB003790' while it is convex for 'Golden Beauty'. The upper part of the flower is convex for 'OHB003790' while it is concave for 'Golden Beauty'. 'OHB003790' has slightly different flower bud and bract colour than 'Golden Beauty'. 'OHB003790' has weaker recurvature of the bracts than 'Golden Beauty'.

Description:

'OHB003790' has an erect, very dense growth habit. The stem has very sparse pubescence. The leaves are short in length and narrow in width. The length to width ratio of the leaf is large. The leaves are linear in shape and have an acute apex. The main colour of the upper side of the leaf blade is dark green. The leaf blade has dense pubescence on the upper and lower side and the leaf margin has very weak undulation.

'OHB003790' flowers mid season. The bud has a pointed apex and the peduncle is medium to long in length. The flowers are positioned high above the foliage and are large in diameter. In lateral view the flower head is concave on the lower part and convex on the upper part. The flower head has a high number of bracts. The involucre and bract have one colour. The pappus is yellow in colour and the bract has very weak recurvature.

Origin & Breeding History: 'OHB003790' originated from a controlled breeding program during November 2000 at Winmalee, New South Wales, Australia. The female parent, 'Sundaze White', characterized by its medium growth habit and white flowers was pollinated with a pool of pollen from 'Antique Shades', 'Copper' and 'Cream'. The initial selection was made in April 2001 and asexual propagation since that time has been through the use of vegetative cuttings.

Tests & Trials: 'OHB003790' was tested in a greenhouse during the summer of 2004, in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were planted into 11cm pots in week 18. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on July 6, 2004. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
