Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'VEAZ0003' (Lanai Peach)

Summary: The upper side of the leaf of 'RIKAV36504' is medium green whereas the leaf of 'VEAZ0003' is dark green. Including the petiole, the leaf of 'RIKAV36504' is longer than the leaf of 'VEAZ0003'. When newly open, the inner side of the corolla of 'RIKAV36504' is orange red developing to lighter orange red whereas the corolla of 'VEAZ0003' is dark pink red to red developing to orange red. When fully open, the inner side of the corolla of 'RIKAV36504' is orange pink with orange red along margin edge whereas the corolla of 'VEAZ0003' is orange pink and light red pink. When aged, the inner side of the corolla of 'RIKAV36504' is orange pink whereas the corolla of 'VEAZ0003' is darker orange pink.

COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): one colour (excluding eye zone) in an evenly distributed pattern, orange red (RHS 41B) developing to lighter orange red (RHS 41C) when newly open, orange pink (RHS 32D) with orange red (RHS 40D) along edge of margin when fully open, orange pink (RHS 27C-D) when aged, strongly fading change of colour with age
COROLLA TUBE: tips of protruding hairs are light green yellow

Origin & Breeding History: 'RIKAV36504' was bred and developed by the breeder, Rika Tsutsumi, in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan. It originated from a controlled cross conducted on May 20, 2013, between the variety 'VEAZ0003', as the female parent, and a seedling designated '12V224-02', as the male parent. From the resulting progeny, 'RIKAV36504' was selected on June 11, 2014, in Bonsall, California, USA, for its good plant branching, flower colour and resistance to powdery mildew. Asexual reproduction of 'RIKAV36504' was first conducted by vegetative cutting in June 2014, in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'RIKAV36504' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2017 at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into shallow, 15 cm pots on April 24, 2017. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or 10 parts of plants of each variety on June 7, 2017. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
