Origin & Breeding History: 'SMNVDMDO' was bred and developed by the breeder, Timothy D. Wood, at Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc. in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. It originated from a controlled cross conducted in the summer of 2005 between the female parent variety 'Michael Dodge' and male parent variety 'Henneke' (Cardinal Candy). From the resulting progeny, 'SMNVDMDO' was selected in 2010 as a single seedling based on plant vigour, compact growth habit, flower coverage and orange coloured fruit in Grand Haven, Michigan. Vegetative reproduction of 'SMNVDMDO' was first conducted by softwood cuttings in 2010 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'SMNVDMDO' was conducted as an outdoor irrigated container trial in the spring of 2019 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants of the candidate variety and 8 plants of the reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 13 litre containers and overwintered in a polyhouse. The trial was arranged in rows with 1 metre spacing between plants. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The flower characteristics were observed on May 1, 2019 while the plant characteristics were observed on May 20, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
