Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Cabri', 'CDC Fortitude', 'AAC Raymore' and 'Strongfield'

Summary: The anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile of 'AAC Stronghold' is of medium intensity whereas it is strong intensity for that of 'AAC Cabri' and 'Strongfield' and of very strong intensity for the coleoptile of 'CDC Fortitude' and 'AAC Raymore'. At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is low for 'AAC Stronghold' while it is medium to high for those of 'CDC Fortitude' and high for those of 'AAC Cabri', 'AAC Raymore' and 'Strongfield'. The flag leaf of 'AAC Stronghold' is shorter than that of 'AAC Cabri', 'AAC Raymore' and 'Strongfield' and wider than the flag leaf of 'AAC Cabri'. 'AAC Stronghold' heads earlier than 'AAC Cabri' and 'Strongfield' and later than 'CDC Fortitude'. The spike and culm neck glaucosity of 'AAC Stronghold' is medium whereas it is strong for 'Strongfield'. At maturity, the straw pith of 'AAC Stronghold' is thick while it is thin for ''Strongfield'. The awns of 'AAC Stronghold' are white while they are black for 'AAC Raymore'. The lower glume of 'AAC Stronghold' is longer than that of 'AAC Raymore' and narrower than the lower glume of 'CDC Fortitude'. The thousand kernel weight is greater for 'AAC Stronghold' than that of 'AAC Cabri', 'CDC Fortitude' and 'Strongfield'.

Description:

PLANT: durum spring type, semi-erect to intermediate growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, heads emerge mid-season

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous lower leaf sheaths and blades

FLAG LEAF: low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: medium glaucosity, curved neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thick pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration

SPIKE: medium glaucosity, parallel sided shape in profile, dense, off-white at maturity, erect attitude
AWNS: longer than length of spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: medium oblong shape, medium length and width, glabrous
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, strongly elevated with second point present
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short to medium length, straight to slightly curved
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to slightly curved beak shape

KERNEL: amber, large, long, medium width, elliptical shape, rounded cheek, short brush hairs, narrow width and medium depth of crease
GERM: large size, oval shape

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good resistance to shattering, good tolerance to drought

PASTA QUALITY: good

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici), moderately resistant to Loose smut (Ustilago tritici), moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Common bunt (Tilletia tritici and Tilletia laevis) and Leaf spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis and Mycosphaerella graminicola), moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species)

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Stronghold' (experimental designations 'A0719-KZ06' and 'DT862') originated from the cross 'DT805'/'DT795'. The crossing was made at the Swift Current Research and Development Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 2007. In 2007, F1 seeds were increased in the greenhouse and seed of the F2 were planted in a disease epiphytotic field nursery in 2008 near Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Individual plants were selected for leaf spot resistance, leaf and stem rust resistance, plant height, straw strength and maturity. F3 and F5 generations were grown in various areas in New Zealand (Lincoln and Leeston). The F4 and F6 generations were grown in various areas in Saskatchewan (near Swift Current and Regina). Various disease reactions were tested in various areas in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta. 'A0719-KZ06' was tested in the 2011 Durum A3 test, 2012 Durum-B test and in the Durum Cooperative Test as 'DT862' from 2013 to 2015.

Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'AAC Stronghold' were conducted at the Semiarid Prairie Agricultural Research Centre, Swift Current, Saskatchewan during the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons. Plots of 2.74 metres squared consisted of 4 rows, each 3 metres long, with an inter-row spacing of 23 cm with 4 replications per variety arranged in an RCB Design. The planting density was 270 plants per metre squared per variety grown per year. There were 40 measurements taken. Plant heights were recorded as an average of the 4 replicated plots with 36 measurements taken. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
