Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'HY124-HRS' and 'DASN0030'

Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile of 'DS206HRS' is medium whereas it is absent or very weak for 'HY124-HRS'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles of 'DS206HRS' is absent or very weak whereas it is strong for 'DASN0030'. The flag leaf of 'DS206HRS' is narrower than that of both reference varieties. The plants of 'DS206HRS' are earlier heading than those of the reference varieties. The spike and culm glaucosity of 'DS206HRS' is weak to medium whereas it is strong to very strong for 'HY124-HRS'. At maturity, the plants of 'DS206HRS' are shorter than those of 'DASN0030'. The spikes of 'DS206HRS' are shorter than those of both reference varieties.

Description:

PLANT: hard red spring type, erect to semi-erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads and matures early to mid-season

SEEDLING: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, lower leaf sheath and blade pubescent

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous sheath and blade

CULM: weak glaucosity at heading, weak curvature of neck
STRAW: hollow to very thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity

SPIKE: weak to medium glaucosity at heading, parallel sided shape, medium density, white to yellow, erect attitude, sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS (AT MATURITY): equal to longer than length of spike, white
LOWER GLUME: medium to long, narrow, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, slightly sloping to straight shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium length, slightly to moderately curved

KERNEL: medium red, medium to large size, medium length, medium to wide, elliptical, rounded cheek, medium length brush hairs, medium width and medium to deep crease
GERM: small to medium size, round to oval

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Mildew (Erysiphe graminis) and Stripe Rust (Puccinia striiformis); moderately resistant to Leaf Septoria (Septoria tritici) and Fusarium Head Blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species)

Origin & Breeding History: 'DS206HRS' (experimental designations 'DASN0004', 'SW206*005') is derived from the cross 'SW124-003' / 'SW184' conducted at the Nairn Research Facility, Ailsa Craig, Ontario in 2004-2005. The F1 seed was planted in the lab in 2006 and was doubled using the doubled haploid (maize pollinated) method. The Y2 was planted as a single row in the nursery in the spring of 2007 and was selected for its general appearance and disease reaction. It was entered into a 2-replicate trial in the spring of 2008 and subsequent internal yield evaluations through 2012. 'DS206HRS' was tested for two years in the Orthogonal Soft Wheat Registration Trial (Ontario Cereal Crop Committee) during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons and was supported for registration in January 2015.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'DS206HRS' were conducted during the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons at the Nairn Research Facility, Ailsa Craig, Ontario. Plot size was 4.35 metres squared and consisted of 6 rows. The row length was 3.0 metres with 18 cm spacing between rows. There were 4 replicates in an RCB Design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
