Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'McKenzie' and 'Glenn'

Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile of 'SY Sovite' is strong whereas it is absent or very weak for 'Glenn'. The anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles of 'SY Sovite' is of weak to medium intensity whereas it is absent or very weak for 'McKenzie'. The flag leaf of 'SY Sovite' is longer than that of 'McKenzie'. The spike of 'SY Sovite' is shorter than that of both reference varieties. The lower glumes of 'SY Sovite' are short with a broad to very broad shoulder whereas they are medium length with a medium to broad shoulder for both reference varieties. The 1000 kernel weight of 'SY Sovite' is heavier than that of both reference varieties.

Description:

PLANT: hard red spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures mid-season

SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of the lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: very high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, glaucosity of the sheath absent, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: weak glaucosity, very weak curvature
STRAW: medium thickness of pith in cross-section at maturity, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: weak glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium to dense, inclined attitude, whitish golden maturity, sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: light brown, shorter than length of the spike
LOWER GLUME: short, medium to wide, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: broad to very broad, straight to partially elevated
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short, straight
LOWEST LEMMA: slightly curved beak

KERNEL: dark red, medium size, medium length and width, oval shape, angular cheek shape, medium length brush hairs, medium width of crease, shallow to medium depth of crease
GERM: medium size, elliptical shape

Origin & Breeding History: 'SY Sovite' (experimental designation 'BW1011') originated from the cross 'HW811' / 'Glenn', made in Berthoud, Colorado, USA in 2009. In 2006, individual head selections were taken from an F2 population screened for height, maturity and disease resistance at the Syngenta Canada, Inc. breeding nursery in Rosebank, Manitoba. Single seed descent technique was used to advance these selections through F3 and F4 generations in the greenhouse and in the summer of 2010, F5 head-rows were individually bulked. In 2011, the individual bulks in the F6 generation were screened for agronomic performance and disease resistance. One bulk selection, designated '08S2133-18' was sent to a winter nursery in New Zealand for generation advance in the fall 2011. In 2012, it was tested in Syngenta Canada, Inc. multi-location research plots. From 2013 to 2015, it was tested as 'BW1011' in the Central Bread Wheat Cooperative trials.

Tests & Trials: The trials for 'SY Sovite' were conducted in Rosebank, Manitoba during the summers of 2015 and 2016. Plots consisted of 7 rows spaced 18 cm apart. The plot size was approximately 1.2 metres wide by 3.0 metres in length, containing 2400 plants per plot. There were 3 replications arranged in a RCB design. Measured plant characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year; 1000 kernel weights were based on 10 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired student's t-test.
