European larch canker, caused by the fungus Lachnellula willkommii, is a serious disease in many parts of Europe. In Canada, larch canker was first discovered in the Maritimes in 1980. Surveys were conducted in 1981 to establish the distribution of the disease and it was found to be widespread on native Larix in southeastern New Brunswick and at a number of locations in central and western Nova Scotia. The disease was first found in Prince Edward Island in 1992.
