The 2008 PPV summer survey has concluded with a total of 776, 491 samples collected by CFIA and Agricorp. The total number of positive orchard samples detected was 133 in 91 blocks located in the Niagara quarantine area. As well, a total of nine positive samples were detected on six residential properties in the Niagara quarantine area. A new strain of PPV, called PPV-Rec, was detected in three trees located on a residential property in the town of Grimsby, Ontario within the Niagara quarantine area. CFIA will continue to monitor for the presence of PPV-Rec strain. This new detection is not likely an impediment to the eradication of PPV in Canada.
Survey activities have been completed. A total of 74 samples have been collected in 10 orchard blocks from 3 different growers. All samples have tested negative.
