GENERAL

• Origin & Breeding: bred from the cross (ND4750-2R x LA1858). Released jointly by the Colorado, North Dakota and Texas Agricultural Experiment Stations in 1999.
• Registration in Canada: deregistered
• Maturity: mid-season

BOTANICAL FEATURES

• Plants: medium; semi-erect; stems moderately pigmented; straight single wings; nodes moderately swollen, weakly pigmented.
• Leaves: dark green; semi-open; petioles weakly pigmented.
  Terminal leaflets: broadly ovate; acuminate tip; truncate and asymmetrical base.
  Primary leaflets: four pairs; medium ovate;.acuminate tip; truncate and asymmetrical base.
• Flowers: numerous; medium size blue-violet corolla with a very prominent star; flower buds strongly pigmented; orange anthers; medium berry production.
• Tubers: oval; smooth red skin; shallow eyes, moderately numerous and evenly distributed; non prominent eyebrows; white flesh.
• Sprouts: ovoid, red-violet base, strongly pigmented and moderately pubescent; green apex.

AGRICULTURAL FEATURES

Medium to high yielding variety; slightly sensitive to metribuzin; moderately resistant to drought. Tubers are moderately sensitive to growth cracks, second growth and black spot bruise. Good storability with few problems and minimal sprouting. Medium dry matter content. Medium dormancy period (6 months).

Cherry Red consistently sets 8 to 9 tubers per plant, rather shallow in the hill. Tuberization occurs early and tubers bulk at a very rapid rate early in the season. Since oversize tubers may be a problem, careful monitoring of the crop beginning the first week of August is recommended.

REACTION TO DISEASES

Moderately resistant: fusarium dry rot, rhizoctonia, hollow heart.
Moderately susceptible: tuber early blight, common scab.
Susceptible: foliar early blight, blackleg, seedpiece decay, leafroll, PVY, PVX, powdery scab, bacterial soft rot.
