2012-10-17- Statement on E. coli O157:H7 Investigation

October 17, 2012 -The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has overseen the cutting of all carcasses that were present at the XL Foods Inc. plant when operations were suspended on September 27. This activity allowed the CFIA to observe the plant's E. coli controls in action.

Over the coming days, the CFIA will thoroughly review its observations of deboning and cutting activities, specific E. coli controls, meat hygiene, sampling techniques and overall sanitation in the plant. In addition, the CFIA will analyze results from product testing conducted by both the company and the CFIA, which are expected from laboratories later this week. Based on these observations and test results, the CFIA will prepare a report of its assessment and make a recommendation on next steps. The CFIA expects to complete this work before the beginning of next week.

The CFIA continues to maintain strict oversight of the movement of some meat products from the plant to rendering, a high-temperature disposal method. None of the rendered material will enter the food system.

The plant will not be permitted to resume normal operations until the CFIA confirms in writing that it is safe to do so. No products from this facility will enter the marketplace until the CFIA is fully confident that the plant's food safety controls are working effectively.

The CFIA's priority continues to be the health and safety of Canadians. CFIA decisions have been, and continue to be, based on scientific evidence and a precautionary approach to protect consumers.
