Destination inspection service (DIS)

As of March 31, 2020, CFIA fees are subject to an annual adjustment based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Please refer to CFIA's Fees Notice for updated fee amounts.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) provides destination inspections for buyers of shipped produce to provide an impartial inspection report for the resolution of buyer/seller disputes regarding the quality of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Services offered

The Destination Inspection Service (DIS) offers the following types of inspections of fresh fruits and vegetables:

How to request an inspection

Participants can complete the Destination Inspection Service (DIS) Request for Service (CFIA/ACIA 5479) on-line and send it via email to the appropriate DIS inspection office using a drop-down menu.

When completing the application please refer to the help text to ensure the proper information is being entered.

When the on-line option is not working or available, the "Request for Destination Inspection" form may be submitted via fax, however the "Declaration of the Requester" must be signed. In order to minimize service delays, the on-line system should be used rather than the fax.

Applicants are encouraged to save a copy of this application for their records, as the application is required to perform an amendment or cancellation. Also the applicant must give a printed copy of the request to the inspector when she or he arrives.

Destination inspection requests are serviced on a first requested, first served basis.

Inspections outside of regular working hours

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)'s Destination Inspection Service (DIS) is now offering inspections outside of regular working hours, on weekends and most civic holidays. This service will now be available in Montréal, Toronto, Kingsville, Calgary and Vancouver, depending on inspector availability. Overtime fees will apply. Refer to CFIA's Fees Notice for updated fee amounts.

Note that a written or electronic (e-mail) application is assumed to be a request for service during regular business hours, and does not constitute an application for after-hours, weekend or holiday service. The following information clarifies the procedures for requesting after-hour, holiday and weekend service.

If weekend or civic holiday service is required, and in addition to submission of the application form, the local 'weekend service' telephone number must be contacted to provide as much advance notice as possible (see below for the weekend phone numbers). The 'weekend service' telephones are monitored on weekends and holidays, and if the duty inspector does not answer immediately, she/he will respond to messages left at these numbers.

If after hours service is required on weekdays, clients must arrange this with the inspection offices in their area prior to close of business on that day, or contact the after working hours/weekend service Contact Number.
