December 7, 2012, Ottawa - Following additional food safety testing and a thorough food safety investigation, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has lifted the suspension on Establishment 231, Capital Packers Inc.'s operating license. Effective December 5, 2012, the establishment was allowed to resume production under ongoing and intensified inspection by the CFIA.

The CFIA has reviewed the corrective action plan submitted by Capital Packers Inc., and the CFIA has determined that the corrective action request related to recall procedures and traceback have been met and that the company has adequate controls in place to meet federal food safety standards. The CFIA's food safety investigation has also concluded that there are no additional potentially unsafe products in the marketplace. On November 22, 2012, Capital Packers Inc., voluntarily recalled certain ham sausage products from the marketplace as they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Operations at Capital Packers Inc. will be subject to intensified monitoring by the CFIA, until further notice. This additional monitoring will allow the CFIA to verify that corrective actions are being effectively integrated into daily plant operations.

Specific dates have been identified for the effective implementation of other corrective action plans that have been submitted by the company. These were in response to corrective action requests issued based on regular inspection activities and are related to general sanitation and maintenance issues such as: building maintenance, ventilation and storage.

The safety of consumers is the CFIA's top priority and the Agency will continue work diligently to ensure there is no potential risk to consumers.
