Guidelines for Highlighted Ingredients and Flavours
The Candian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has developed additional guidance to industry on claims that highlight ingredients or flavours on food labels and advertisements, such as "made with fruit" or "cherry flavoured ice cream".
The Guidelines for Highlighted Ingredients and Flavours clarifies existing requirements on how to highlight parts of a food product without misleading consumers on the composition.
For example, a label cannot overemphasize the presence of an ingredient to make their product seem more desirable to a consumer.
The objective of these guidelines is to help industry meet labelling regulations and provide consumers with meaningful information about the food they purchase.
These Guidelines have been drafted based on extensive research, consultation and public opinion research.
Public Comments Under Review
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has completed its online consultation on its Guidelines for Highlighted Ingredients and Flavours. Comments will be reviewed, after which time the guidelines will be finalized.
In the interim, industry must comply with these guidelines, as well the Food and Drug Act and Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act that require food labels to be accurate, truthful, and not misleading.
