Although the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) came into force on January 15, 2019, other requirements will be introduced in 2020 and 2021 based on food commodity, type of activity and business size. For more information, refer to the SFCR timelines.
The Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) provide for two distinct types of ministerial exemptions from the application of a provision of the Act or the Regulations. These provisions apply to all food commodities. The two types of ministerial exemptions are [174(1), SFCR]:
- for the purpose of test marketing a food, and
- for the purpose of alleviating a shortage in Canada in the available supply of a domestically manufactured, processed, produced food.
Bilingual labelling test market exemptions are covered separately under subsection 206(1) of the SFCR and align with provisions under subsections B.01.012(2) to (10) of the Food and Drug Regulations.
