GENERAL

  • Origin & Breeding: bred by the United States Department of Agriculture in 1940 from the cross (USDA X96-56 x USDA X528-170) and selected in Maine in 1941.

BOTANICAL FEATURES

  • Plants: medium size, spreading; thin stems, prominently angled; nodes slightly swollen, slightly reddish purple; wings prominent, slightly waved.
  • Leaves: medium to large; midribs scantly pubescent.
    Terminal leaflets: large, broadly ovate; tip acuminate; base asymmetrical.
    Primary leaflets: large, elliptical-ovate, three pairs.
    Secondary and tertiary leaflets: few.
  • Flowers: white.
  • Tubers: short-elliptical to round; slightly flaky ivory yellow skin; shallow eyes; white flesh.
  • Sprouts: spherical, grayish purple, moderately pubescent.

AGRICULTURAL FEATURES

High yielding variety; widely adapted, particularly to mineral and muck soils; good resistance to skinning and bruising; good storability; high total solids.

  • Utilization: good to very good for boiling and baking; suitable for chipping and starch.
  • Chief Markets: fresh market, early chippings.

REACTION TO DISEASES

Resistant: common scab, late blight.
Moderately resistant: black leg, tuber net necrosis.
Susceptible: fusarium dry rot, verticillium wilt, PVX, PVY.
Highly susceptible: leaf roll.
