GENERAL

  • Origin & Breeding: bred in the United States from unknown parents; may be a mutant of Early Rose.
  • Year registered in Canada: 1923

BOTANICAL FEATURES

  • Plants: medium-sized, erect to spreading; stems medium thick, prominently angled; nodes slightly swollen; internodes finely mottled reddish purple; wings prominent, slightly waved, double.
  • Leaves: moderately open, medium large; midribs scantly pubescent.
    Terminal leaflets: large, broadly ovate, acute tip; base partially truncate.
    Primary leaflets: medium large, broadly ovate, four pairs.
    Secondary leaflets: few, on midribs between pairs of primary leaflets, at the junction of the midrib and petiolules, and on the petiolules.
    Tertiary leaflets: few.
  • Flowers: lilac with white tips.
  • Tubers: large to medium-sized; round with flattened ends; smooth creamy white skin; shallow to deep eyes; white flesh.
  • Sprouts: bright reddish purple.

AGRICULTURAL FEATURES

Medium to high yielding variety; widely adapted; highly susceptible to bruising; high specific gravity.

  • Utilization: very good for boiling and baking; good chipping quality early in season. Chieftly used as a home garden variety.
  • Chief Markets: early fresh market, early chipping, home gardens.

REACTION TO DISEASES

Highly resistant: PVA (field resistant).
Moderately resistant: blackleg, fusarium dry rot, phoma rot.
Susceptible: late blight, common scab, leaf roll, potato wart, PVX, PVY.
Highly susceptible: verticillium wilt.
