Distribution Épicerie C.T.S. Inc. fined $10,000 for contravening the Food and Drugs Act

On January 18, 2021, at the Montréal Courthouse, Distribution Épicerie C.T.S. Inc., located in Montréal, Québec pled guilty to 2 charges under the Food and Drugs Act.

The court fined the company a total of $10,000 and ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the affected products.

An inspection by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) demonstrated that the company sold extra virgin olive oil in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its character, value, composition and merit, which is an offence under subsection 5(1) of the Food and Drugs Act.

The CFIA verifies olive and other vegetable oils to verify compliance with compositional and labelling requirements.
