Access to information and privacy
Possible delays in treating your request
Openness, transparency and accountability are guiding principles of the CFIA. However, our ability to respond to requests within the timelines mandated by the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act may be affected by the exceptional measures put in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and protect the health and safety of Canadians. Access to information and personal information requests received from the public continue to be important to us. We will continue to make reasonable efforts to respond to requests, in accordance with operational realities. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during this period as we all navigate these unprecedented challenges.
Access to information
As part of its commitment to openness and transparency, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recognizes your right to access information in government records. The Access to Information Act allows any person or corporation in Canada to submit an official request for Government of Canada records. All federal government institutions, including the CFIA, must make every reasonable effort to help anyone making an access to information request. The identity of all requesters is protected.

The Privacy Act gives any Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada the right to access personal information about them that is held by the federal government. This law also protects against unauthorized disclosure of personal information and strictly controls how the federal government will collect, use, store and dispose of any personal information.
The CFIA's Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) Office manages access to information requests, personal information requests and Privacy Impact Assessments. You can contact the office
