End of restrictions

March 5, 2020: The CFIA is no longer restricting the import of romaine lettuce and salads containing romaine lettuce originating from California. Proof of origin is no longer required.

November 22, 2019

Further to our Statement issued on November 22, 2019 regarding the current outbreak investigation on E. coli O157:H7 bacteria in romaine lettuce, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is adding a requirement for Proof of Origin for romaine lettuce imports from California (USA) and salad mixes from all of the USA, containing romaine lettuce.

Shipments of romaine lettuce from California must be accompanied by a letterhead, on a separate page, showing a Proof of Origin with the date of signing and the signature of the exporter declaring that the lettuce was not harvested in the Salinas, California, growing region (counties of Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Benito and Monterey).

Shipments of salad mixes from the USA containing romaine lettuce must be accompanied by a letterhead, on a separate page, showing a Proof of Origin with the date of signing and the signature of the exporter declaring that the romaine lettuce was not harvested in the Salinas, California, growing region (counties of Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Benito and Monterey).

We encourage brokers and importers to submit their transactions in advance.

For more information, brokers and importers may contact the CFIA National Import Service Centre (NISC) from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) at 1-800-835-4486 (Canada and USA).
