Marc Dugas Fined $10,000 for Offences Under the Food and Drugs Act

July 15, 2016, Ottawa: July 15, 2016, Ottawa: On June 14, 2016, at the Caraquet Provincial Court in Caraquet, New Brunswick, Marc Dugas was convicted of two counts of contravening subsection 5(1) of the Food and Drugs Act and was ordered to pay a $5000 fine for each count.

Subsection 5(1) of the Food and Drugs Act indicates that no person shall label, package, treat, process, sell or advertise any food in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its character, value, quantity, composition, merit or safety.

The CFIA's investigation determined that, on July 24, 2013 and July 29, 2013, Mr. Dugas sold a total of 7500 pounds of snow crab with false labels to Viandex Inc.

The CFIA is responsible for the administration and enforcement of federal legislation, acts and regulations, including the Food and Drugs Act.
