Alfonso Centanni Fined $11,000 for Offences Under the Health of Animals Act and Regulations

February 28, 2017, Ottawa: On January 18, 2017, in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court, British Columbia, Mr. Alfonso Centanni entered a guilty plea to one count of contravening subsection 12(1) of the Health of Animals Regulations and was ordered to pay a fine of $7,000. Mr. Centanni also pleaded guilty to one count of contravening subsection 35(1) of the Health of Animals Act and was ordered to pay a fine of $4,000.

The CFIA's investigation determined that on or between May 5 and June 10, 2015 —at or near the Boundary Bay, B.C., port of entry —Mr. Centanni imported hatching eggs into Canada without a permit, contrary to subsection 12(1) of the Health of Animals Regulations. In addition, on or around July 14, 2015, Mr. Centanni hindered a CFIA inspector in carrying out their duties in contravention of subsection 35(1) of the Health of Animals Act.

Subsection 12(1) of the Health of Animals Regulations states that no person shall import a regulated animal without a permit.

Subsection 35(1) of the Health of Animals Act states that no person shall obstruct or hinder or make any false or misleading statement either orally or in writing to an analyst, inspector or officer who is performing duties or functions under this Act or the regulations.
