On September 12, 2017, in the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto, ON, Ontario Corporation 1780010 Operating as Eastern Meat Solutions Inc. of Etobicoke, Ontario, pled guilty to and was convicted on five counts of contravening section 31(1) of the Food and Drugs Act. Eastern Meat Solutions Inc. was ordered to pay total fines of $200,000.

Section 31(1) of the Food and Drugs Act states that:

Every person who contravenes any provision of this Act or the regulations, as it relates to food, is guilty of an offence and liable:

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) investigation determined that the company falsely labelled a substantial quantity of meat products – 4557 cases, weighing a total of 125,697 kg.

This is contrary to Section 5.(1) of the Food and Drugs Act, which states that no person shall label, package, treat, process, sell or advertise any food in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive, or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its character, value, quantity, composition, merit or safety.

In these offences, the false labelling of 4557 cases of meat products included quantities of meat labelled as prime rib boneless beef trim that was not prime rib beef trim; Angus boneless beef trim that was not Angus beef trim; and, sirloin boneless beef trim that was not sirloin beef trim. The total market value of the meat at the time of its detention by the CFIA was $613,572. The court ordered all the detained meat be disposed of by rendering.
