Electronic ear tags are made of different components, one of which is an electronic chip which uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The identification number of the chip is displayed when read with a compatible reader.

RFID tag readers which have met conformance and performance standards are listed on a webpage of the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency - PDF 955 kb, acting as a responsible administrator under the livestock identification and traceability program.
