Summary: The fruit skin of 'PremA96' has a pink red overcolour whereas that of 'Ariane' has a red overcolour. 'PremA96' has fruit with a medium depth eye basin whereas 'Ariane' has a deep to very deep eye basin.

Description:

TREE: medium to strong vigour, ramified, spreading growth habit, fruit bearing on spurs only, begins flowering early to mid-season, mid-season to late eating maturity
ONE-YEAR OLD SHOOT: thin to medium thickness, medium internode length, medium brown on sunny side, weak to medium density of pubescence on distal half, medium number of lenticels

PETIOLE: very short to short, large extent of anthocyanin colouration from base
LEAF: upwards attitude in relation to shoot, short, narrow, medium length to width ratio, light green, serrate type 2 incisions of margin, medium density pubescence on lower side

FLOWER: dark pink at balloon stage, small diameter when petals are pressed into horizontal position, intermediate arrangement of petals, stigma positioned above the anthers

YOUNG FRUIT: medium extent of anthocyanin overcolour
FRUIT: very small to small, short to medium height, very small to small diameter, medium to large height to diameter ratio, obloid shape, absent or weak ribbing, absent or weak crowning at calyx end, medium size eye, medium length sepal
FRUIT SKIN: absent or weak bloom, absent or weak greasiness, yellow ground colour, absent or small area of russet around stalk attachment and on cheeks, absent or small area of russet around eye basin, medium amount of small lenticels
OVERCOLOUR OF SKIN: large area, pink red, medium to dark intensity, solid flush
STALK: short to medium length, thin to medium thickness
STALK CAVITY: very shallow to shallow, very narrow to narrow

FRUIT FLESH: firm, cream colour, closed or slightly open aperture of locules in transverse section

Origin & Breeding History: 'PremA96' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent 'Royal Gala' and the male parent 'GS 2184' in 1989 carried out at The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. 'PremA96' was selected for its fruit colour, appearance, texture, flavour, and shelf life.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'PremA96' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number APP196, purchased from the New Zealand Intellectual Property Office, Plant Variety Rights Office, New Zealand. The trials were conducted by the Cultivar Centre, Plant & Food Research, Havelock North, New Zealand, from 2014 to 2016.
