Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC McGwire' and 'CDC Rattan'

Summary: The anthocyanin colouration of the auricles on the flag leaf is of medium intensity for 'CDC Marlina' whereas the intensity is weak for the reference varieties. The spike of 'CDC Marlina' is shorter than those of the reference varieties. The glaucosity of the spike of 'CDC Marlina' is medium to strong whereas it is weak for 'CDC McGwire'. The spiculation of the inner lateral nerves of the dorsal side of the lemma of 'CDC Marlina' is medium to strong whereas it is absent or very weak for 'CDC McGwire'. The plants of 'CDC Marlina' are taller than those of 'CDC Rattan'.

Description:

PLANT: two row, general purpose spring barley
YOUNG PLANT: erect to semi-erect growth habit at tillering, absent or very sparse pubescence on the lower leaf sheaths

FLAG LEAF: low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very sparse pubescence on blade
FLAG LEAF SHEATH: medium glaucosity, absent or very sparse pubescence
AURICLES: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very sparse pubescence on the margins

SPIKE: emerges mid-season, medium to strong glaucosity, semi-erect attitude, platform shaped collar, parallel shape, lax to medium density, sterile spikelet parallel to weakly divergent, length of glume and awn of the median spikelet are equal to length of grain
LEMMA AWNS: medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of tips, longer than length of spike, rough spiculations on margins along the entire length
FIRST SEGMENT OF RACHIS: medium length, weak curvature

KERNEL: anthocyanin colouration of nerves of lemma at early to soft dough stage ranges from absent or very weak to medium intensity, whitish aleurone layer, long rachilla hairs, husk absent, medium to strong spiculation of inner lateral nerves of dorsal side of lemma, no hairiness of ventral furrow, clasping disposition of lodicules, horseshoe shape basal markings, short to medium length, medium width

AGRONOMY: fair resistance to lodging, good resistance to shattering, good tolerance to straw breakage, fair to good tolerance to drought

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to True loose smut (Ustilago nuda)

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Marlina' (experimental designations 'HB11316', 'SH080213') originated from the cross 'CDC Rattan' x 'SH041242' made in a greenhouse at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2005 using a pedigree breeding system. Both the F1 and F2 generations were grown as bulk populations in a winter nursery in New Zealand in 2005 and in Saskatoon in 2006. During the winter of 2006 and 2007, both the F3 and F4 generations were grown as single seed derived lines. In 2007, 'CDC Marlina' was grown and selected from the 'SH080213' line which was bulked from seed selected from a F5 hill plot in Saskatoon. The variety was tested in the Crop Development Centre yield trials in 2008 to 2010 followed by testing in the Western Canadian Hulless Barley Registration Trials as 'HB11316' during 2011 and 2012. Selection criteria included yield, threshability, earlier maturity, disease resistance and grain quality.

Tests & Trials: Trials were conducted at the University of Saskatchewan Crop Science Field Laboratory in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the summers of 2013 and 2014. The trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Each 4.5 metres squared plot consisted of 5 rows 3.66 metres in length with a row spacing of 0.2 metres. The planting density was 215 plants per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements each year. The mean differences were significant to at least a 5% probability level based on LSD values.
