Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Liricashower Pink' and 'Sunbelchipi'

Summary: 'Sunbelkupi' is a calibrachoa variety that has a more pendulous growth habit than 'Sunbelchipi'. 'Sunbelkupi' is mainly distinguished from the two reference varieties by the flower colour. The inner side of the throat of the flowers of 'Sunbelkupi' is yellow, whereas the throat of 'Liricashower Pink' is white on three corolla lobes fading to yellow in the corolla tube. 'Sunbelkupi' also has larger leaves than 'Liricashower Pink' with a more rounded leaf apex.

Description:

'Sunbelkupi' is a calibrachoa variety with a pendulous growth habit, abundant branching and dense foliage. The stems are thin with sparse pubescence. The leaves are dark green, oblanceolate in shape and have a rounded apex. Pubescence on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf is sparse. The leaves are angled toward the apex of the stem. The sepals are linear with sparse pubescence. 'Sunbelkupi' produces single, funnelform, pink flowers. The inner side of the throat of the flower is bright yellow. The apex of the corolla lobe is obcordate.

Origin & Breeding History: In the development of 'Sunbelkupi' a wild type of petunia plant called 'A1' (female), native to Brazil was crossed to another wild type called 'B3' (male), also native to Brazil. The original cross took place at the Hakushu Nursery Centre for Suntory Ltd., Japan, in May, 1992. From the cross 5 seedlings were selected for decumbent habit and flower colour. These 5 seedlings were used as the female parent in a cross with the wild type 'B2' plant as pollen parent in a cross in January 1993. From this cross 10 seedlings were selected and put into a flower potting and bedding trial from which 2 plants were selected in the summer of 1993. Finally one plant was selected in October 1995 as being distinguishable from any other variety. This selection was named 'Sunbelkupi'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Sunbelkupi' were conducted in a greenhouse at Norseco Inc., Boisbriand, Quebec during the summer of 2000. The trials consisted of nine plants of each variety, grown in 25 cm hanging pots (3 plants per pot). Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 10 measurements.
