Origin & Breeding History: 'Kakegawa S82' originated from a hybridization conducted in May of 1999 in Kakegawa, Japan. The female parent was an unnamed breeding line with deep rose coloured flowers, creeping plant growth habit and erect center stem designated 'R-9' and the male parent was variety 'Kakegawa S24' (Liricashower Pure White). From August of 1999 to August of 2003, three selections and crosses were conducted to produce F3 seed. The selection criteria at each generation was the creeping plant growth habit. From the F3 generation, one seedling was selected for vegetative propagation based on its scarlet rose coloured flowers and creeping plant growth habit with semi-erect center stem. In August of 2001, this selection was planted in 9 cm hanging pots for evaluation in greenhouse and open field trials. The selection was subsequently named 'Kakegawa S82'.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Kakegawa S82' was conducted in a polyhouse at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2005. The trial included 15 plants of each variety grown in 10 cm pots. The plants were spaced 13 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
