Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Sunbelkupi' (Million Bells Trailing Pink)

Summary: 'KLEC04063' has a spreading to trailing growth habit while 'Sunbelkupi' has a cascading growth habit. The pedicel anthocyanin colouration in 'KLEC04063' is stronger than in 'Sunbelkupi'. 'KLEC04063' has a darker ring of purple colour around the entrance of the corolla tube than 'Sunbelkupi'. The conspicuousness of the veins inside the corolla tube of 'KLEC04063' are stronger than 'Sunbelkupi'.

Description:

'KLEC04063' is a short calibrachoa variety with a spreading to trailing growth habit. The shoots are thin to medium in thickness, and short to medium in length with no anthocyanin present. The leaves are a medium to dark green, elliptic in shape, with an obtuse, almost blunt, apex. There is no variegation present on the leaf blade. The sepals are lanceolate and rhombic in shape with anthocyanin present. 'KLEC04063' produces single, funnelform, red-purple flowers. The corolla has a medium diameter, with medium to strong lobing, medium undulation of the margin and weak to moderately conspicuous purple veins. The corolla lobe apex is truncate and retuse. The inside of the corolla tube is yellow and has veins of medium conspicuousness. Anther colour is yellow.

Origin & Breeding History: 'KLEC04063' originated from the cross of proprietary seedlings S94 and S95 during 1999 in Stuttgart, Germany. The new variety was selected in the summer of 2000 based on flower colour. 'KLEC04063' was evaluated in greenhouse trials during 2001-2004. The new variety was assessed for rooting performance, flowering and growth characteristics. Outdoor trials were conducted during 2000-2003 to assess outdoor performance, quality of flowers and resistance to weather and diseases.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'KLEC04063' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included a total of 18 plants of each variety. Plants were grown from rooted cuttings transplanted into 25 cm baskets on May 27, 2005. Each basket contained 3 cuttings with a total of six baskets per variety. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 RHS colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
