Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Leader', 'CDC Frontier' and 'Amit'

Summary: The pod of 'CDC Lancer' is shorter than the pods of the reference varieties and narrower than those of 'CDC Leader' and 'CDC Frontier'. The seed of 'CDC Lancer' has a round to angular shape with medium to strong ribbing whereas the seed of 'Amit' is round with absent or very weak to weak ribbing. The dry seed weight of 'CDC Lancer' is greater than that of 'Amit'. The plants of 'CDC Lancer' are tolerant to imidazolinone herbicide whereas the plants of 'CDC Leader', 'CDC Frontier' and 'Amit' are not tolerant.

Description:

PLANT: erect to semi-erect growth habit, weak to medium ramification, medium to tall, early to mid-season maturity

STEM: no anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: medium green

FLOWER: flowers early to mid-season, white

POD: light to medium green, medium length beak, one and two ovules per pod
DRY SEED: beige one month after harvest, high seed weight, round to angular shape, medium to strong ribbing

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Lancer' (experimental designation 3662) originated from the cross between 'CDC Orkney' and 2144-1 with two subsequent backcrosses to 2144-1 made in 2015 at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A single plant selection was made from the F2 population. Subsequent selections were made in the F3 to F8 generations where 9 F9 sub-lines were used to establish the breeder seed in 2016. Selection criteria included yield, seed weight, seed size, seed coat colour, days to flower, days to maturity, plant height and disease resistance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC Lancer' were conducted by the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, at Elrose, Saskatchewan in 2018 and 2021. The trials were arranged in a RCB design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 40 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except for seed weight which was based on 4 measurements per variety in 2018 and 8 measurements per variety in 2021. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
