Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Bethune', 'CDC Melyn' and 'Omega'

Summary: At the bud stage, the colour of the flower crown is blue violet for 'CDC Dorado' while it is violet to dark violet for 'CDC Melyn' and violet for 'Omega'. The plants of 'CDC Dorado' flower earlier than those of 'CDC Bethune' and 'CDC Melyn'. At flowering, the natural height of the plants of 'CDC Dorado' is shorter than that of 'CDC Bethune', 'CDC Melyn' and 'Omega'. Immediately after flower opening, the distal end of the filament is white for 'CDC Dorado' while it is blue for 'CDC Bethune' and 'CDC Melyn'. The distal end of the style is white for 'CDC Dorado' while it is pale blue to blue for 'CDC Bethune' and 'CDC Melyn'. When fully developed, the corolla for 'CDC Dorado' is blue while it is violet for 'CDC Melyn' and 'Omega'. Ciliation of the false septa is present in the boll of 'CDC Dorado' while it is absent in the bolls of 'CDC Bethune' and 'CDC Melyn'. The stem length, from the cotyledon scar to the first branch as well as from the cotyledon scar to the top boll, is shorter for 'CDC Dorado' than those of the reference varieties. The seed colour for 'CDC Dorado' is yellow, while it is light to medium brown for 'CDC Bethune'. The 1000 seed weight of 'CDC Dorado' is greater than that of 'CDC Melyn'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Dorado' (experimental designations FP2432, FY11567) was developed at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, using a pedigree breeding method. It originated from the cross between the breeding line 'FP2119' and the experimental line, CDC Bethune / G1303-95 // TMP1412/3/SP2129-1-2-1KN, conducted in 2006, in the Phytotron at the University of Saskatchewan. The F2 population was grown at the Kernen Crop Research Farm in 2007 and advanced using the pedigree system from F3 through to F5. The selection criteria used at each generation was primarily stand vigour, maturity, oil content, iodine value, and yellow seed coat colour. From 2011-2012, the line was evaluated as FY11567 in replicated field trials in Saskatchewan. It was entered and tested in the Yellow Linseed Cooperative Trial in 2013 and 2015 as FP2432.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC Dorado' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the University of Saskatchewan`s Kernen Crop Research Farm in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Trials consisted of 3 replications of each variety, organized in a randomized complete block design. There were 6 rows per replicate with a row length of 3.66 metres with 19 cm between rows. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety each year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
