Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Moala' (Paradise True Red) and 'Fisnics Lired' (Sonic Red 2003)

Summary: 'KLEI01028' has a taller plant height than the reference varieties. 'KLEI01028' has a narrower leaf than 'Moala'. 'KLEI01028' has a larger flower diameter than 'Moala'. 'KLEI01028' has no eye zone while 'Fisnics Lired' has a medium, pink coloured eye zone.

Description:

'KLEI01028' is a New Guinea Impatiens variety with strong anthocyanin colouration on the upper third of the shoot. The leaf has a medium length to width ratio and is not variegated. The main colour of the upper side of the leaf blade is medium green. There is medium to strong anthocyanin on the midrib and veins on the upper side of the leaf. The lower side of the leaf is green in colour between the veins. The lower side of the leaf blade has medium to strong anthocyanin on the midrib and veins. The petiole is short to medium in length and has strong anthocyanin on the upper side.

'KLEI01028' has single red flowers with no eye zone. The lower petal has a deep incision and is medium in length. The upper petal is medium to broad. The pedicel and spur have strong anthocyanin and the spur has a medium to strong curvature.

Origin & Breeding History: 'KLEI01028' originated from a controlled cross between two numbered lines, made in autumn of 1998. Seedlings were selected in the spring of 1999 based on flower size and form, flower colour, growth habit and foliage characteristics. 'KLEI01028' was evaluated in indoor trials at Stuttgart, Germany in 2000 for early flowering, plant habit, foliage characteristics, flower form, flower size and colour. Outdoor trials were conducted at Stuttgart in the summer of 2000 to test for resistance to weather, disease and pests.

Tests & Trials: 'KLEI01028' was tested in a greenhouse during the spring and summer of 2004, in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were planted into 6cm cells in week 19 and transplanted into 15cm pots in week 25. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on August 5, 2004. Colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
