Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Dodolla', 'AAC A100' and 'AAC A110'

Summary: At flowering, the plant of 'AAC A120' is shorter, with a thinner stem diameter, than that of 'AAC A110'. The silique of 'AAC A120' is shorter than that of 'AAC A100'. 'AAC A120' has a longer pedicel than those of 'Dodolla' and 'AAC A100'.

Description:

PLANT: oilseed type, open pollinated, allotetraploid, erect growth habit, intermediate to tall at flowering, flowers mid-season

SEEDLING: weak anthocyanin colouration on stem

STEM: medium thickness

LEAF: orbicular to wide elliptic, few lobes, medium green, rounded apex, rounded to sharp margin, very shallow dentations, weak glaucosity, absent or very sparse pubescence

FLOWER STALK: medium-strong to strong branching
FLOWER: pale yellow

SILIQUE : erect attitude, medium length, medium length beak
SEED: medium size, round shape, predominantly yellow

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: fair to good resistance to lodging, good resistance to shattering

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC A120' (experimental designations 050514EM and 110994EM) plant material was originally derived from Ethiopia (landraces of unknown exact origin) and incorporated into the breeding program in 2007 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), Saskatoon Research Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Single plants designated as 050514EM were selected based on seed colour and size in 2007. From these single plant selections, 545 progeny rows were sown in 2008 and evaluated for general vigour, disease susceptibility, and seed quality. Based on the plant type (phenotype), seed colour, size and oil content, 18 progeny were advanced by pulling 10 plants from each progeny plot. Seeds were sown in a non-replicated nursery in 2009. From the 180 plants, 6 progeny were selected using the same selection criteria. An elite line was created in 2010 from the open-pollinated bulk of these selected progeny. This equal bulk was sown in isolation and the seed harvested in 2011 was designated as 110994EM.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC A120' were grown during the summers of 2013 and 2015 in Minto, Manitoba. There were 2 replicates for each variety each year. In 2013, the plots were arranged in a RCB design whereas in 2015, the 6.6 metres squared plots were arranged in a non-randomized design. Each replicated plot consisted of 6 rows with a row spacing of 20 centimetres, a length of 5.5 metres and width of 1.2 metres. The planting densities were 7.5 and 5.0 grams of seed per plot in 2013 and 2015, respectively. The measured characteristics were based on 50 measurements per plant or parts of plants per variety with the exception of the stem diameter which was based on 25 measurements per variety in 2013. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on unpaired Student's t-tests.
