Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Cutlass', 'AC Vulcan' and 'Forge'

Summary: The density of leaf pubescence on 'AAC Oriental 200' is sparse to medium whereas it is absent to very sparse for 'Cutlass' and 'AC Vulcan'. 'AAC Oriental 200' has a longer leaf than 'Cutlass' and a narrower and shorter leaf than 'Forge'. The petiole of 'AAC Oriental 200' is shorter than that of 'Forge'. The plants of 'AAC Oriental 200' flower later than those of 'Cutlass'. When all branches are raised vertically, the total plant length of 'AAC Oriental 200' is longer than that of 'Cutlass' and 'AC Vulcan' whereas it is shorter than that of 'Forge'. The silique of 'AAC Oriental 200' is shorter than that of all the reference varieties. 'AAC Oriental 200' has a shorter pedicel than 'Forge'.

Description:

PLANT: open pollinated, diploid, erect growth habit, medium height at flowering, flowers mid-season

SEEDLING: absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration on stem

STEM: medium thickness

LEAF: wide elliptic shape, medium number of lobes, medium green, intermediate apex between acute and rounded, undulating margin, shallow to medium depth dentations, medium glaucosity, sparse to medium pubescence

FLOWER STALK: medium branching
PETALS: yellow, medium length and width

SILIQUE : erect attitude, medium width, short, medium length beak, medium length pedicel

SEED: medium to high number per silique, medium size, round, predominantly yellow brown

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good resistance to lodging and to shattering

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Oriental 200' (experimental designation 'O60DH17') originated from the cross between the varieties 'Cutlass' and 'Forge' conducted in 2009 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Saskatoon Research Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Double haploid lines were generated using the microspore culture method. In 2011, agronomic performance was assessed on 178 double haploid lines which were grown in a two-replicate nursery in Saskatoon. Twenty-five elite double haploid lines with high yielding potential and desirable quality traits were advanced into four-replicate yield trials at three locations in 2012. Based on the agronomic performance and quality traits of these trials, the experimental doubled haploid line 'O60DH17' was entered into the Cooperative Mustard Test in 2013.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC Oriental 200' were grown during the summers of 2014 and 2015 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Saskatoon Research Farms in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots were arranged in a RCB design with 4 replicates for each variety each year. Each 7.2 metred square replicated plot consisted of 4 rows with a row spacing of 30 centimetres, a length of 6 metres and width of 1.2 metres. The planting densities were 140 seeds per square metre of plot. The measured characteristics were based on 60 measurements per plant or parts of plants per variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
