Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Dancer' and 'Leggett'

Summary: The plants of 'CDC Norseman' are taller than those of 'Leggett'. The pubescence on the stem above and below the upper culm node of 'CDC Norseman' is absent to very sparse whereas it is dense on both reference varieties. 'CDC Norseman' has a longer panicle than 'Leggett' and shorter panicle than 'CDC Dancer'. 'CDC Norseman' has a medium amount of hairs or spines on the lowest panicle whereas 'CDC Dancer' has few. The lower glume of 'CDC Norseman' is longer when compared to both reference varieties.

Description:

SEEDLING (5-9 tiller stage): spring type, semi-erect juvenile growth habit, absent to very sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheath and blade

LEAF (at booting stage): dark green, absent to very sparse pubescence on margin, medium intensity of glaucosity at green stage, medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves

CULM: absent to very sparse hairiness on stem above and below upper node

PANICLE (shortly after heading): lax to medium density, medium amount of short hairs or spines on the lowest node
PANICLE BRANCHES: equilateral/symmetrical orientation, semi-erect attitude, less than 30 degrees between rachis and dominant side branch
SPIKELET: weak glaucosity of glumes, fracture type separation of lower florets, semi-nodding attitude

RACHILLA: medium length between primary and secondary florets, medium length of groove, sparse to medium pubescence
LEMMA: weak to medium glaucosity, medium to large extent of lateral overlap on palea, white at maturity, absent to very sparse pubescence on lateral and dorsal surfaces, very weak to medium tendency to be awned

KERNEL (primary kernels from upper spikelets): hulled, short basal hairs, cream colour, two to three per spikelet, dense pubescence on groat
SCUTELLUM: pointed tip, medium sized

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Norseman' (experimental designation OT3066 and SA091413) originated from a cross between 'OT590' and 'CDC Minstrel' conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2007. The F1 generation was greenhouse grown in a bulk population during the summer of 2007. The F2 and F3 generations were grown as single seed derived lines in the greenhouse. The F4 generation was grown as panicle hill plots during the summer of 2008. Single panicles were harvested and sent to a nursery in New Zealand for the F5 generation. The F5 derived F6 line was bulked as the line 'SA091413'. Further testing was conducted from 2009 to 2013. Selections were made for higher Beta-glucan, low oil, very good groat percentage, increased yield, and early maturity.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'CDC Norseman' were conducted in 2014 and 2015 at the Crop Science Field Laboratory, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A three replicate randomized complete block design was planted each year consisting of 5 rows per plot. Plots were 4.5 square metres with a density of 215 plants per square metre. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
