Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Bolina', 'Kara', 'Nice' and 'Pomona'
Summary: On the leaf below the flag leaf, the margin has sparse pubescence for 'Kyron' whereas the margin has medium pubescence for 'Kara'. The degree of glaucosity of the leaves is weak for 'Kyron' whereas the degree of glaucosity is strong for 'Kara'. The frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is medium to high for 'Kyron' whereas the frequency is absent to weak for 'Kara' and 'Pomona'. The flag leaf of 'Kyron' is longer than the flag leaf of 'Kara', 'Nice' and 'Pomona'. The flag leaf of 'Kyron' is broader than the flag leaf of 'Pomona'. Shortly after heading at the green stage, the plants of 'Kyron' are taller than the plants of 'Bolina' and 'Kara', and shorter than the plants of 'Nice'. The degree of glaucosity of the glume is medium for 'Kyron' whereas the degree of glaucosity is strong for 'Kara' and 'Pomona'. The degree of glaucosity of the lemma is medium to strong for 'Kyron' whereas the degree of glaucosity is absent for 'Bolina', strong for 'Kara', and very weak for 'Nice' and 'Pomona'. The panicle of 'Kyron' is longer than the panicle of 'Bolina'. The tendency of the lemma to be awned is strong for 'Kyron' whereas the tendency is absent or very weak for 'Bolina' and 'Pomona', and medium for 'Kara'. The 1000 kernel weight of 'Kyron' is heavier than the 1000 kernel weight of 'Bolina', and lighter than the 1000 kernel weight of 'Kara' and 'Pomona'. The colour of the kernel of 'Kyron' is cream whereas the colour of the kernel of 'Bolina' is light brown.
Description:
PLANT: hulled winter type, medium to strong frequency with recurved flag leaves
YOUNG PLANT: semi-erect to intermediate between semi-erect and semi-prostrate growth habit
LOWER LEAF: absent or very sparse pubescence of sheath and blade
LEAF: dark green, sparse pubescence of margin of leaf below flag leaf, weak glaucosity at green stage
UPPER CULM NODE: absent or very sparse pubescence of stem above and below node
PANICLE: equilateral/symmetrical orientation of branches, medium density, erect to horizontal attitude of branches, 30 to 45 degree angle between rachis and dominant side branch
LOWEST PANICLE NODE: no hairs or spines
GLUME: medium degree of glaucosity
LEMMA: medium to strong glaucosity, small to medium degree of lateral overlap on palea, white to cream colour at maturity, absent or very sparse pubescence of lateral and dorsal surfaces, strong tendency to be awned
SPIKELET: semi-abscission type separation, nodding attitude, two kernels
RACHILLA: short to medium distance between primary and secondary floret, absent to sparse pubescence
KERNEL: cream colour, basal hairs are short when present
Origin & Breeding History: 'Kyron' (experimental designation 'C3M15026') originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2004, in Svalov, Sweden. From the resulting progeny, selections were made at the F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F8 and F9 generations with the establishment of seed taking place at the F7 generation. 'Kyron' was selected in 2009 for its agronomic qualities, kernel quality, yield and resistance to foliar diseases.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Kyron' were conducted during 2016 and 2017 in the Champ Techno 5 at La Coop Fédérée, in Saint-Hyacinthe, Québec. Each trial consisted of 3 replications per variety distributed in a randomized complete block design and covering a plot size of 7.5 square metres. Each replicate consisted of a 5 m long row and the rows were spaced 0.38 m apart. The seeding density was such that it resulted in a total of over 3000 plants per variety. The measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements in 2016 and a minimum of 21 measurements in 2017. The mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
