Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Aksinto' (Cape Daisy Kalanga) and 'Highside'
Summary: 'Balserlav' has shorter plants and shoots than 'Askinto', and has longer leaves than 'Highside'. The inflorescences of 'Balserlav' have no incomplete ray floret whorls, whereas those of both reference varieties do. 'Balserlav' has a smaller inflorescence diameter and smaller ray florets than 'Highside'. Shape of the ray florets is elliptic for 'Balserlav', whereas it is obovate for 'Askinto' and 'Highside'. The main colour of the upper side of the ray florets is violet for 'Balserlav' while it is lighter violet for 'Askinto' and purple to blue pink fading to white near the base for 'Highside'. The floret disc of 'Balserlav' is dark blue, whereas it is purple for 'Askinto'.
Description:
'Balserlav' is an early-flowering osteospermum variety with erect to semi-erect shoots. The leaves are dark green with no variegation and weak lobing. The inflorescence has one complete ray floret whorl and no incomplete whorls. The ray florets are elliptic in shape. The upper side of the ray floret is violet with a blue violet margin, whereas the lower side is mostly blue-violet. The floret disc is dark blue.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Balserlav' originated from a controlled breeding program which took place in Billerbeck, Germany during August 1999 . The variety was the result of a cross between a proprietary osteospermum selection designated '09-19-98' as the female parent and another proprietary osteospermum selection designated 17-44-98 as the male parent. The initial selection was made in April 2000, and propagation since then has been through vegetative cuttings.
Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'Balserlav' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included 15 plants of each of the candidate and reference varieties grown in 6 inch pots. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on September 12, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
