Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Golden', 'CDC Meadow' and 'CDC Amarillo'

Summary: From axil to tip, the length of the stipule of 'CDC Lewochko' is medium, while it is short for 'CDC Amarillo'. The density of flecking on the stipule of 'CDC Lewochko' is dense while it is sparse to medium for 'CDC Meadow'. The plants of 'CDC Lewochko' flower late in the season while the plants of 'CDC Golden' and 'CDC Meadow' flower mid-season. The pod of 'CDC Lewochko' is wider than that of the reference varieties. The stem of 'CDC Lewochko' is longer than that of 'CDC Golden'.

Description:

LEAFLETS: absent

STIPULE: medium length from axil to tip, medium length of lobe below axil, dense flecking

TIME OF FLOWERING: late
FLOWER: maximum of two per node
STANDARD: white, level to moderately arched base, absent or very weak undulation
UPPER SEPAL: medium width, acuminate apex

POD: entire parchment, blunt distal part, weak curvature, light to medium green, suture strings present
IMMATURE SEED: light green
SEED: ellipsoid, simple starch grains, yellow cotyledons, matures mid to late season

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Lewochko' originated from the cross '1897-14' / 'Agassiz', conducted in 2008 at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It was developed from a single plant selection from the F2 population. 'CDC Lewochko' was selected for its yield, days to maturity, days to flowering, vine length, resistance to lodging, seed weight, seed size, disease resistance and crude protein concentration. 'CDC Lewochko' was further evaluated in the Field Pea Cooperative trials in 2014 and 2015.

Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'CDC Lewochko' were conducted at the Sutherland Field Site of the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. The trials were established using a complete randomized block design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 65 seeds per square metre. The measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year and there were 8 measurements taken for 100 seed weight. The mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
