Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Kim'

Summary: 'Patriot Bright Red' has larger plants than 'Kim'. The base of the leaf in 'Patriot Bright Red' is closed while it is wide open to opened for 'Kim'. 'Patriot Bright Red' has a less wavy leaf margin than 'Kim'. The petiole and peduncle of 'Patriot Bright Red' are longer than in 'Kim'. The markings on the upper petals are less conspicuous in 'Patriot Bright Red' than in 'Kim'. 'Patriot Bright Red' has no markings on the lower petals while 'Kim' has markings. 'Patriot Bright Red' has a darker red flower colour than 'Kim'.

Description:

'Patriot Bright Red' is a zonal type pelargonium variety which has an upright to intermediate growth habit. The stem is green in colour, and medium to thick in thickness with medium to dense pubescence. The leaf is a type 1 shape, has a closed base and crenate margins. The margins have weak to medium lobing with shallow incisions and weak to medium waviness. There is medium pubescence on the upper side of the leaf blade. The colour of the leaf blade is medium green with no variegation. The zone on the upper side of the leaf blade is green to reddish brown in colour, weak in conspicuousness and normal in position. The petiole has medium pubescence.

'Patriot Bright Red' belongs to the red inflorescence colour group. 'Patriot Bright Red' has dense pubescence on the peduncle. The flower buds are elliptic in shape. The florets are semi-double and red in colour. The petals overlap and the margins are entire. The conspicuousness of the venation on the upper petal is weak. The white zone at the base of the upper petal is very small to small in size. The pedicel has medium to dense pubescence and the colour in the middle third is medium red. There is no swelling of the pedicel. The sepals have medium to dense pubescence and are green in colour with red at the base.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Patriot Bright Red' originated from a hybridization made in 1995, at Lompoc, California, USA. The female parent 'Sassy Dark Red' and the male parent being 'Avenida'. The initial selection was made in January 1996.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Patriot Bright Red' were conducted in a poly house during the summer of 2003, in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from unrooted cuttings, and were later transplanted into 11.5cm pots on September 9, 2003. Unless indicated, all measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements. All colour measurements were made using the RHS colour chart 2001.
