Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Evening Glow'

Summary: 'Patriot Salmon' has a closed leaf base while 'Evening Glow' has an open one. The margin of the leaf of 'Patriot Salmon' is wavier than in 'Evening Glow'. 'Patriot Salmon' has a dark red middle third of the pedicel while in 'Evening Glow' it is green in colour. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the sepals of 'Patriot Salmon' is stronger than in 'Evening Glow'.

Description:

'Patriot Salmon' is a zonal type pelargonium variety which has an upright to intermediate growth habit. The stem is green in colour, and medium to thick in thickness with dense pubescence. The leaf is a type 1 shape, has a closed base and crenate margins. The margins have weak to medium lobing with shallow incisions and medium to strong waviness. There is dense pubescence on the upper side of the leaf blade. The colour of the leaf blade is medium green with no variegation. The zone on the upper side of the leaf blade is green to reddish brown in colour, and medium to strong in conspicuousness. The petiole has dense pubescence.

'Patriot Salmon' belongs to the salmon inflorescence colour group. 'Patriot Salmon' has dense pubescence on the peduncle. The flower buds are elliptic in shape. The florets are semi-double and red-pink in colour. The petal margins are entire. The conspicuousness of the venation on the upper petal is weak to medium. The white zone at the base of the upper petal is small in size. The colour of the pedicel in the middle third is medium red. There is no swelling of the pedicel. The sepals have dense pubescence and are green in colour with very strong red colour at the base.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Patriot Salmon' originated from a hybridization made in 1994, at Lompoc, California, USA. The female parent 'Eclipse Salmon' and the male parent being 'Salmon Satisfaction'. The initial selection was made in January 1995.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Patriot Salmon' were conducted in a poly house during the summer of 2003, in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from unrooted cuttings, and were later transplanted into 11.5cm pots on September 9, 2003. Unless indicated all measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements. All colour measurements were made using the RHS colour chart 2001.
