Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Condolavender' and 'Cobink'

Summary: 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' has less of a drooping habit than 'Condolavender'. The plant width is medium-wide for 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' while it is narrow for 'Cobink' and wide for 'Condolavender'. 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' has a longer shoot length than 'Cobink' but a shorter one than 'Condolavender'. The petiole length in 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' is shorter than the reference varieties. The undulation of the margin of the corolla lobe is medium to strong for 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' while in 'Condolavender' it is strong to very strong. The flower colour is a darker pink for 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' compared to 'Condolavender'.

Description:

'Kirimaji Double Capricious' is a double petunia variety which has a horizontal to semi drooping growth habit, and short plant height. The shoots are medium to thick in thickness with absent to very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The shape of the leaf varies from elliptic to ovate with a narrow obtuse shaped apex. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour with no variegation. There is a petiole present.

The sepals of 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' are linear in shape with no anthocyanin colouration . The overall flower shape is funnelform . The pedicel is short in length and narrow in width. The margin of the corolla has medium undulation. 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' produces purple to blue pink flowers. The prominence of the veins on the inner side of the corolla lobe is weak. The corolla tube length is short for 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' and white to yellow green colour on the inner side. The anthers are cream coloured.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' is the product of a controlled breeding program in Tochigi, Japan during 1999. The female parent was an unnamed internal breeding seed line of Petunia hybrida, while the male parent was petunia 'Sonata Pure White'. Initial selection was made in 2000.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kirimaji Double Capricious' were conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario during the fall of 2002. The trials included 15 plants of each variety. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 10 cm pots on August 16, 2002. All colour measurements were made using RHS colour chart 2001. Unless otherwise indicated measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
