Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Revolution White' (Surfinia White) and 'Conbloss' (Supertunia Mini White)

Summary: 'Suncopaho' is a petunia variety which has thinner shoots and narrower sepals than 'Revolution White'. The sepals of 'Suncopaho' are linear, whereas 'Revolution White' has elliptic to obovate sepals. 'Suncopaho' has white flowers with a smaller diameter than each of the reference varieties. There is less undulation of the margin of the corolla lobes in 'Suncopaho' than in either reference variety. The veins on the inner side of the corolla tube of 'Suncopaho' are less conspicuous than those of 'Revolution White'.

Description:

'Suncopaho' is a petunia variety which has a creeping growth habit. The plants are medium in height and have thin shoots which have no anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade of 'Suncopaho' is medium green and ovate to elliptic in shape, with no variegation or blistering. The sepals are linear in shape and have no anthocyanin colouration.

'Suncopaho' has single, white flowers which are funnel form in shape. The corolla is moderately lobed. The upper side of the corolla has one colour, with moderately conspicuous, yellow-green veins. The margins of the corolla lobes are weakly undulating. The corolla tube is white with yellow at the base and weakly conspicuous veins. Before pollen dehiscence the anthers are yellowish white.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Suncopaho' originated from the crossing of a variety called '9Pt-27a' as the female parent, with a seedling called 'P59d-C10' as the male parent. The crossing was conducted at the Omi R&D Centre, Suntory Flowers Limited, in July 2000. In April 2001, 80 seedlings were obtained from that crossing. These seedlings were grown in pots in glasshouses and were evaluated. In September 2001, one seedling was selected in view of its growth habit, flower size and colour. That seedling was propagated by cuttings and a trial was carried out to examine the botanical characteristics of the selection. The new variety was named 'Suncopaho'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Suncopaho' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, planted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 14, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
