Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: '490' (Freedom Red)

Summary: 'PER6602' is a poinsettia variety which has more intense anthocyanin colouration on the stems and also on the veins of the leaf blade than the reference variety '490'. The lobe development on the leaves of 'PER6602' is very weak to weak, whereas '490' has medium lobe development. 'PER6602' has a longer petiole and more rugosity between the veins of the bracts than '490'.

Description:

'PER6602' is a poinsettia variety with medium to strong anthocyanin colouration on the stem. The leaves are broad ovate in shape with a wedged to rounded base and no anthocyanin colouration on the upper and lower sides of the leaf blade. However, the veins of the upper side of the leaf have medium anthocyanin and on the lower side the veins have weak to medium anthocyanin colouration. 'PER6602' has very weak to weak lobe development on the leaf blades and no incisions of the margins. The sinuses between the lobes are rounded. The petiole has strong anthocyanin colouration on the upper and lower sides.

'PER6602' has red, uniformly coloured bracts. There is very weak or no lobe development in the bracts. There are no incisions of the margin. There is weak to moderate folding of the bracts, with no curving or twisting. The intensity of rugosity between the veins is strong to very strong. The largest bracts of 'PER6602' are broad ovate in shape with a rounded base. 'PER6602' has small to medium greenish yellow glands of the cyathium, with medium anthocyanin colouration on the margins of the glands.

Origin & Breeding History: 'PER6602' was discovered at the Paul Ecke Ranch, Encinitas, California in January, 2002. The variety was selected for its textured bract presentation, dark red bract colour and dark green leaf colour.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'PER6602' were conducted in a greenhouse during the summer/fall of 2005 in St. Catharines, Ontario. The trial consisted of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 6 inch pots on August 17, 2005. The pots were spaced 12 inches apart, from the pot center. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on December 1, 2005. All colour determinations were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
