Variety used for comparison: 'Anuschka'

Summary: The proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration of the base of the lightsprout is high for 'Mariette' whereas the proportion of blue is absent or very low for 'Anuschka'. The plants of 'Mariette' are shorter than the plants of 'Anuschka'. The openness of the leaf of 'Mariette' is intermediate between closed and open whereas the leaf of 'Anuschka' is open. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the upper side of the leaf midrib of 'Mariette' is low to medium whereas the extent is high for 'Anuschka'. The frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets of 'Mariette' is low whereas the frequency of coalescence is medium for 'Anuschka'. The anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla of 'Mariette' is of absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity whereas the anthocyanin colouration is of medium extent and weak intensity for 'Anuschka'. The shape of the tuber of 'Mariette' is short oval whereas the shape of the tuber of 'Anuschka' is oval to long oval.

Description:

LIGHTSPROUT: medium to large, ovoid shape, medium number of root tips, medium to long lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, high proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, medium to dense pubescence
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: small in relation to base, closed habit, strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse to medium density of pubescence

PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate to leaf type where foliage is half open to closed and stems are partly to hardly visible, semi-upright growth habit, mid-season maturity

STEM: medium extent of anthocyanin colouration along entire length

LEAF: outline is large, openness is intermediate between closed and open, medium green on upper side, low to medium extent and weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on upper side of midrib, medium presence of secondary leaflets, low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: large, leaflet is narrower than long
LEAFLET: weak waviness of margin, shallow to medium depth of veins, medium glossiness of upper side, glabrous blade at apical rosette

INFLORESCENCE: medium frequency per plant, small to medium size
PEDUNCLE: low to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER BUD: medium to high extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: medium size
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration

TUBER: short oval shape, light to medium yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow to medium depth, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: yellow, develops medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light

Origin & Breeding History: 'Mariette' originated from a cross conducted in 2001 between the selections designated 'L 80/93/33' and 'L 96/496/499'. It was selected in 2003 for its positive agronomic characteristics.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Mariette' was conducted during the growing season of 2015 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 18.5 metre long row containing 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
