Variety used for comparison: 'Yukon Gold'
Summary: The base of the lightsprout of 'Connect' has very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration and sparse to medium density of pubescence whereas the base of the lightsprout of 'Yukon Gold' has strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration and dense pubescence. The tip of the lightsprout of 'Connect' has sparse pubescence whereas the tip of the lightsprout of 'Yukon Gold' has medium density of pubescence. The plants of 'Connect' mature late to very late whereas the plants of 'Yukon Gold' mature mid-season. The openness of the leaf of 'Connect' is closed whereas the leaf of 'Yukon Gold' is open. The presence of secondary leaflets of the leaf is strong for 'Connect' whereas the presence is weak for 'Yukon Gold'. The upper side of the leaf of 'Connect' is medium to dark green whereas the leaf of 'Yukon Gold' is light green. The inflorescences are absent for 'Connect' whereas the frequency of inflorescences per plant is weak to medium for 'Yukon Gold'. The base of the tuber eye is yellow for 'Connect' whereas the base of the tuber eye is red for 'Yukon Gold'.
LIGHTSPROUT: medium size, broad cylindrical shape, few root tips, short lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low to medium proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, sparse to medium density of pubescence
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: medium size in relation to base, closed habit, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence
PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate type where foliage is half open and stems are partly visible, upright to semi-upright growth habit, late to very late maturity
STEM: low extent of anthocyanin colouration along entire stem
LEAF: large outline, closed, medium to dark green upper side, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of upper side of midrib, strong presence of secondary leaflets, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: leaflet is large to very large and narrower than long
LEAFLET: weak waviness of margin, medium depth of veins, weak glossiness of upper side, pubescent blade at apical rosette
TUBER: round to short oval shape, medium yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: yellow, develops weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light
Origin & Breeding History: 'Connect' originated from a cross between 'YP 98-3', as the female parent, and the variety 'Satina', as the male parent, conducted in 2002 in Windeby, Germany. From the resulting progeny, 'Connect' was selected in 2003 in Emmeloord, Netherlands based on its maturity, yield, disease resistance, processing traits, morphological traits and storage characteristics.
Tests & Trials: The comparative test and trial for 'Connect' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the growing season of 2017 in Drummond, New Brunswick. There were 70 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. The trial consisted of a single, 21.2 metre long row with plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety.
