Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Yukon Gold' and 'AAC Confederation'

Summary: The lightsprout of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is spherical whereas the lightsprout of 'Yukon Gold' is ovoid and that of 'AAC Confederation' is broad cylindrical. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the lightsprout for 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is strong at the base whereas it is of medium intensity for 'Yukon Gold'. At the base of the lightsprout, the proportion of blue is absent or low for 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' whereas both reference varieties have a medium proportion of blue. The pubescence on the lightsprout of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is very sparse to sparse at the base whereas the pubescence is of medium density for both reference varieties. The foliage structure of the plants of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is a leaf type (foliage closed, stems not, or hardly visible) whereas 'Yukon Gold' is a stem type (foliage open, stems clearly visible). The plant of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' has an semi-upright growth habit while the plant of 'Yukon Gold' has an upright growth habit. The extent of anthocyanin colouration of the stem of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is absent to very low whereas it is low for the reference varieties. The anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is located at the base whereas it is halfway up the stem for 'Yukon Gold' and along the entire stem for'AAC Confederation'. The leaf outline of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is large whereas it is of medium size for the reference varieties. The plants of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' are shorter than the plants of 'Yukon Gold'. The anthocyanin colouration of the inner side of the corolla for 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is very weak to weak intensity with an absent or low proportion of blue whereas the anthocyanin colouration and proportion of blue are medium for 'Yukon Gold'. The tuber of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is round whereas it is oval for 'Yukon Gold' and short oval for 'AAC Confederation'. The base of the eye of the tubers of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is yellow whereas it is red for 'Yukon Gold'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' (experimental designations 'F10082' and '15777-02') originated from a controlled cross made in 2008, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, between the selection designated 'N0634-07', as the female parent, and the variety 'AC Chaleur', as the male parent. In 2009, true potato seed from this cross was sown in a greenhouse, and the resulting seedling tubers were planted in 2010 for evaluation and selection, at the Benton Research Substation of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, in Fredericton. 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' was selected in 2010 from a single hill trial at the Benton Research Substation for its vine maturity, tuber appearance, shape and size.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' was conducted during the 2017 growing season at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Fredericton Research and Development Centre, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of 2 replicates of 30 plants per replicate for each variety, grown in two 7.5 metre length rows spaced 90 centimetres apart. The plants were spaced 25 centimetres apart within the row. The measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
