Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Georgina' and 'Vivaldi'

Summary: The base of the lightsprout of 'Danina' has a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration with an absent or low proportion of blue while that of 'Vivaldi' has a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration with a medium proportion of blue. The base of the lightsprout of 'Danina' has sparse pubescence while the base of the lightsprout of 'Georgina' has a medium density of pubescence and that of 'Vivaldi' has medium to dense pubescence. The tip of the lightsprout of 'Danina' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration while those of the reference varieties have an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The plants of 'Danina' mature very late in the season while the plants of 'Georgina' mature mid to late season and those of 'Vivaldi' mature mid-season. The leaf of 'Danina' has a large outline while that of 'Georgina' has a medium sized outline. The leaf of 'Danina' is open while that of 'Vivaldi' is intermediate between closed and open. The flower bud of 'Danina' has a medium extent of anthocyanin colouration while those of the reference varieties is absent or very low. The inflorescence of 'Danina' is medium to large whereas that of 'Georgina' is small.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Danina' originated from the cross between 'E 01/181/153' and 'L 696/92/921', conducted in Ebstorf, Germany in 2007. Final selection was made Ebstorf, Germany, in 2008 based on positive agronomic criteria including disease resistance and yield.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Danina' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. in Central Blissville, New Brunswick during the 2022 growing season. The field trial consisted of a single, 22 metre long row per variety. Each row contained 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart with inter-row spacing of 1.1 metres. Measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. Lightsprout characteristics were assessed on 10 tubers harvested from the comparative trial and observed approximately 2.5 to 3 months after sprouting was promoted by exposing the tubers to an external agent.
